A Beginner’s Guide to Roulette Basics—Wheel, Bets, and Gameplay

Roulette is one of the live casino games Singapore that continues to capture the hearts of gamblers. With its iconic spinning wheel and the thrill of anticipation, roulette offers a unique casino gaming experience.

While roulette is a fairly simple game to play, it is paramount for gamblers, particularly beginners, to understand the basics of the game to enjoy it fully. Roulette encompasses straightforward objectives, game rules, and mechanics, as well as offers a wide variety of betting categories.

Gameplay

Roulette’s gameplay is simple yet thrilling—the main objective of players is to guess which number or colour the spinning ball will stop.

To start a round, players place their bets by laying down chips on the betting mat—designated area with numbers and betting options. Once all players have placed their bets, the croupier (casino dealer) spins the wheel in one direction and the small ball is thrown in the opposite direction. The ball then eventually settles in one of the numbered/coloured pockets as the wheel slows down, determining the winning outcome.

Roulette Variants

Roulette comes in various forms, each with its unique features and rules. The two most popular variants are American and European roulette.

American Roulette

This variant has 38 pockets—36 pockets with the numbers 1 through 36, one (1) pocket for a single zero, and one (1) pocket for a double zero. The additional double-zero pocket increases the house edge in American roulette, making this variant a more challenging and dynamic game for players.

European Roulette

European roulette features a wheel with 37 pockets, numbered 1 through 36, and a single zero. The absence of a double-zero pocket lowers the house edge in this roulette variant. This makes European roulette a more favourable choice for many players.

Types of Roulette Bets

Inside Bets

Inside bets are wagers placed on a specific number or combination of numbers within the interior of the roulette layout. These bets have higher risk but also come with higher potential payouts.

Single Number Bet – A single-number bet, also known as a straight-up bet, is the most straightforward type of inside bet. Players only need to place their chips on any number from 1 to 36 and hope the ball will land on that number.

Split Bet – A split bet involves placing wagers on two numbers that are placed next to each other on the table layout but not on the roulette wheel. If the ball lands on either of these numbers, the player wins their bet.

Street Bet – The street bet covers three consecutive numbers in a horizontal line on the roulette table layout. Placing chips at the end of the line indicates the chosen street.

Square Bet – Square bet, also known as corner or quad bet, involves wagering on a block of four numbers that form a square on the roulette table layout. To make this bet, players must place the chips at the intersection of four numbers.

Six Line Bet – The six line bet covers six consecutive numbers or two adjacent streets. Similar to a street bet, players must place chips at the end of the line, but in the case of the six line bet, they must place the chips at the intersection of the lines.

Snake Bet – Snake bet is a unique and less common inside bet that covers a specific series of numbers in a zigzag pattern across the roulette table layout, specifically: 1, 5, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 23, 27, 30, 32, 34. Placing chips in the lower corner of the box that corresponds to number 34 indicates a snake bet.

Outside Bets

Outside bets are the roulette wagers placed on the outer section of the table layout, covering larger groups of numbers. These bets generally come with higher odds of winning but offer lower payouts.

Column Bet – A column bet covers 12 numbers and provides a higher chance of winning. It involves wagering on one of the vertical columns of numbers on the table layout.

Dozen Bet – Similar to column bet, the dozen bet covers 12 numbers, but this time, they are grouped by dozens – 1 to 12, 13 to 24, and 25 to 36. To place this bet, Players can place their chips in the designated areas for each dozen.

High or Low Bet – A high or low bet is a straightforward outside bet that provides players a 50/50 chance of winning. This bet involves wagering on whether the ball will land on a high (19 to 36) or a low (1 to 18) number.

Red or Black Bet – Another straightforward outside bet is the red or black bet; this involves predicting the colour of the winning number. By placing chips on the designated red or black areas on the table layout, players effectively double their bet if they make the correct colour prediction.

Odd or Even Bet – The odd or even bet entails guessing whether the winning number will be odd or even. By placing chips in the red or black betting boxes on the table layout, players increase their chances of winning with a 50/50 proposition.
